With the Common Tactical Truck programme, the US Army wants to introduce a new generation of heavy logistics vehicles. In response to the Army’s Request for Prototype (RPP), Am General and Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) have jointly proposed a prototype to compete for the replacement of the heavy and medium wheeled tactical vehicle (TWV) fleet.
The companies are proposing a vehicle based on IDV’s High Mobilty Range vehicle family, which was first publicly presented at Eurosatory 2022. The highly modular truck series was designed specifically for military use, writes IDV. The vehicles guarantee their users state-of-the-art safety through a high level of ballistic protection and mine protection wherever required. They range from 4×4 to 10×10 with different cabin types and the ability to perform a variety of tasks. This, he said, ensures a high degree of commonality to reduce the logistical burden envisaged for the CTT programme.

“Together with AM General, we will be able to deliver innovative vehicle and protection solutions that meet the requirements and needs of the US Army,” said Claudio Catalano, CEO of IDV. The solutions developed are a concrete demonstration of the commitment and proactive approach that IDV and AM General have developed thanks to this strategic partnership, he added. IDV says it is currently a partner of the United States Marine Corps for the new generation of Amphibious Combat Vehicles and has delivered innovative vehicle and protection solutions to meet the needs of military customers worldwide.
The CTT programme aims to create a unified family of vehicles with flexible and secure architecture to provide soldiers with a safer, more effective and interoperable environment. This includes load handling systems and systems for fueling, towing and transporting critical parts and supplies.
Orders for the production of prototypes are expected to be placed by the end of this year. After the evaluation of the submitted prototypes, which will begin in 2023, a production contract for up to 5,700 vehicles is expected to be concluded with one applicant in 2025. The volume is estimated at five million US dollars. The first vehicles are to enter service with the troops from 2028.
Two months ago, Rheinmetall announced that it would participate in the CTT together with General Motors Defense with a vehicle based on the new HX3 truck series.
