Boris Pistorius, the Social Democratic Minister of the Interior from Lower Saxony, is to become the new Minister of Defence. The news was broken on 17 January 2023 by concurrent reports from Der Spiegel and Tagesschau. The previous day, former Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht had tendered her resignation from office, and it was expected that an official announcement on the new Defence Minister would be issued shortly afterwards. Pistorius was born in Osnabrück in 1960, and completed an apprenticeship in commerce, did 15 months of basic military service in the 1980s and then studied law. Following his studies, Pistorius went into public administration, where he became Lord Mayor of Osnabrück in 2006 and has been Lower Saxony’s Minister of the Interior since 2013.
