Bird Aerosystems AMPS-MV for UN Helicopters

BIRD Aerosystems has announced that the company has completed an installation of its AMPS-MV Airborne Missile Protection System, which includes the MACS sensor, on UN Air Operations Mi-17 helicopters. The AMPS-MV systems is toprotect the UN Air Operations VIPs when flying in Africa.

This follow-on order comes after several previous installations of Bird’s products on UN Air Operations aircraft in recent years. According to the company, Bird’s AMPS missile protection system provides the enhanced protection for military and civilian aircraft against the threat of ground-to-air missiles (MANPADS). AMPS automatically detects, verifies, and foils SAM attacks through the use of countermeasure decoys (flares and chaff) and by Directional Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) that jam the missile’s IR seeker and protect the aircraft. The AMPS-MV includes Bird Aerosystems’ Missile Approach Confirmation Sensor (MACS), which is to perform confirmation of suspected incoming missile threats detected by the main electro-optical passive sensors. MACS is to ensure that only actual missiles aredeclared by the system and reacted upon.
