There are, however, several people who have a problem with this particular plan, since the estimated costs are similar to those of a newly built power plant.
Note that the entire annual budget for the Ministry of Transportation is 2 billion Euros, and one year of contributions for this project would cost around 400 million.
One of the opponents to this project is Harri Pursiainen, the Chief of Staff at the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications who said, “I wonder whether it could ever be sensible, given the estimated traffic volumes.”
Another disadvantage is the rerouting that would be required of foreign traders.
They would be forced to pass through Helsinki, and exclude many other ports, which would be an obvious upset to shipping companies.
