Berit’s winds cause immense upheaval in Estonia

The citizens of Estonia had prepared themselves for a huge catastrophe caused by immense flooding quite similar to the one they faced in 2005.

Instead they were faced with a low intensity danger; the storm of Berit. It wrecked great havoc in various parts of Estonia.

It created a huge amount of frenzy in Scandinavia.  It battered the street lights off the ground in Kuresarre, and for a second time in three days, the strong gushing winds knocked over the great Christmas tree of Tallinn.

The storm brought with it the impending problem of power cut down. Eesti energia claimed that about 6500 people did not have power to use on Monday morning.

The storm, Berit is a killer storm. It is responsible for the death of two citizens of Norway. It came into the Estonian region from the Estonian islands and the western coast. The winds of this howling storm were measured to be about 100 kph.

Even though the higher intensity winds reached Estonia early in the morning, sufficient damage was caused by the winds the evening before then, even though they were lower in intensity than the winds that raged in the next day

There have been many incidents reported regarding the damage caused by this storm. A reported incident; people travelling between Tallinn and Tartu were crushed by a tree and one of the persons was taken to the hospital.

If you take a look at the surface weather charts from November 24 to November 28, you can see that we were actually only very minimally affected by Berit(called Xaver by Free University of Berlin). What caused the bigger storm was the cyclone that formed behind it, called Yoda by FU-Berlin. By Monday morning, the Norwegian Berit was already in Arhangelsk. See for yourself:

    Not quite sure where the mixup originated in the media, but I guess somebody failed to check the general environment and assumed causation by the correlation.
